Density assumption

Common landscape gravel averages ~2700 lb/yd³ (1.35 tons). Pea gravel is closer to 2800 lb/yd³; river rock varies with stone size.

Tip: For driveways, plan 4-6 inches base + 2-3 inches finishing layer. Compaction reduces volume ~10-15% — leave settling buffer on.

Gravel sizing cheat sheet

#57 stone (¾"-1")

Driveway base, drainage. Compacts well.

Pea gravel (¼"-½")

Walking paths, dog runs. Soft underfoot, migrates.

River rock (1"-3")

Decorative beds, dry creek beds. Doesn't compact.

Crushed limestone

Driveways, parking pads. Compacts to a hard surface.

#2 stone (1.5"-2.5")

Heavy-duty drainage, riprap. Won't compact.

Decomposed granite

Pathways, patios. Compacts hard, drainage poor.
